- Make changes to the way you eat. Permanent weight loss requires that you change your lifestyle and your approach to nutrition. They essentially are but it depends on what they are, who prepares them, etc. A yummy ceasar salad with all its trimmings may contain as many as 800 calories per serving. This represents more than half of the recommended daily calorie intake for an average non dieting woman.
Once you become comfortable and acquainted with the calories of the foods you consume you can discontinue counting them. After a while, you will simply know.

Practice portion control. Over the years our dinner plates and soup bowls got much larger. At home as well as at restaurants we shamefully load our plates with enough food to feed two. Most of us were brought up believing that we must eat everything on our plates. In keeping with this imprinted trait we continue to do so. The problem is that the communication between our stomach and our brain is not instant. There is about a 20 minute lag. When we eat enough our brain does not know that yet. As a result of the large food portions and a lack of the instant communication we constantly overeat. Thus we get fat.
The best way to overcome this conditioning is to eat smaller portion. To help, we should reduce the size of our plates. Our plates will still be full but with much less food. It is amazing how well this "tricking of our mind" works. In the same vein, when at a restaurant, especially the "all you can eat" ones, serve yourself on a salad plate rather than on a dinner plate.
